Machrihanish Golf Club

The Scottish seaside links of Machrihanish Golf Club is difficult to get to. You have to really want to play Machrihanish because it is at the very southern end of the Kintyre peninsula (the Mull of Kintyre, same Mull of Kintyre as Paul McCartney's song) on the southwestern coast of Scotland.

Yet as difficult as isolated as it is, it's the favorite of many golfers and I believe it's worth the trip. (But don't count on the golf travel companies to get you here; it's too much trouble for them to schedule a game here. And even if they did, they'd have to charge an arm and a leg. Machrihanish is like playing golf on Mt. Olympus. The beauty surrounding you is breathtaking--and the course isn’t bad either!

The golf club was founded in 1876 as the Kintyre Golf Club. It had 10 holes before the club officially existed, and was quickly expanded to 12. In 1879, Tom Morris was brought in to redesign and expand the golf course to the full 18 holes, including today's first hole.

In 1879 Old Tom Morris after playing in the first cash prize tournament held at the club summarized in the following recognized statement, "that this course was specifically designed by The Almighty for playing golf" reflecting on just how marvelous and natural the course was.
